Panasonic DMP - BD85K Blu-ray Player Review

Panasonic has revealed its new Blu-ray Players coming out this year. One of which is the DMP-BD85, currently available to purchase. A good sign for consumers is that Panasonic has made some significant improvements to their players this year. For example the DMP-BD85 has better audio processing and Vera Cast has increased its online services to provide us with more movies and TV shows.

Besides Vera Cast, the Panasonic DMP-BD85 comes with a great set of features and functions. Some of them include Adaptive High Precision 4:4:4 and HDMI Jitter Purifier. These features help provide the DMP-BD85 to achieve the best possible image and sound quality when playing a Blu-ray disc via the HDMI cable. If you are concerned about energy consumption, the DMP-BD85 has a feature called Viera Link Eco Function. The Blu-ray Player will turn itself on/off depending on the status of your TV set.

Video Quality: You can connect the DMP-BP85 via the HDMI, Component and Composite video outputs. HDMI will give you the best results for image quality. As mentioned earlier, the DMP-BD85 Blu-ray Player has features that help with the image quality. Another such feature is the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. This feature keeps the movie's original colors crisp and clear. The DMP-BD85 provides all the standard up scaling of DVDs to 1080p. On a Blu-ray Disc it provides images at 1080/24p with no requirement of up conversion on compatible TVs.

Audio Quality: You can connect the audio for the DMP-BD85 via HDMI, the 7.1-channel Analog Audio out, or the Digital Audio out (1 Optical, 1 Coaxial). The Blu-ray Player can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Panasonic seems committed to trying to provide the best sound possible. Along with it's HDMI Jitter Purifier you get the Digital Tube Sound Simulator (producing warm fuller sounds), Dialog Enhancer, Audio DAC: 192kHz/24bit, Night Surround Mode, and Dynamic Range Compression. Providing you with many options to choose from to get the optimal sound.

All these video and audio features combine to give you a stunning home movie experience. Visuals are filled with vibrant and deep colors. Sounds come across as rich and full. Allowing you to enjoy movies at the highest level. Movies can be watched either by a disc or you can take advantage of the Panasonic's Vera Cast. With Vera Cast, you can access great online content. It provides online services such as Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand (new to Vera Cast this year) to stream movies. You also can access YouTube, Picasa, and many more great online sites from the VIERA Cast screen. The Panasonic DMP-BD85 has an Ethernet Port to connect to the Internet. Or you can connect using a wireless USB adapter included with the player. You simply plug it into one of the two provided USB ports. Plugging it into the USB port in the rear of the Blu-ray player is probably the best option.

THE PROS: The Panasonic DMP-BD-85K has great audio and video quality. Easy to setup and has Vera Cast which allows you to access Netflix, Amazon-On-Demand, YouTube, Picasa and other online sites. It is Wi-Fi 'Ready' (Includes USB Wi-Fi Adapter), so no LAN cable is required. It has a "Digital Tube Sound Simulator mode", along with other great audio features, which provides great realistic sounds.

THE CONS: No DLNA feature and some of its competitors like Samsung BD-C6500 have Built-in Wi-Fi. DMP-BD85K is only Wi-Fi 'Ready', meaning a Wireless LAN Adapter is needed. However, you do not need to purchase one because a USB Wireless Adapter is included with the DMP-BD85K. But it would be nice if it was built-in the Blu-ray Player.

THE FINAL WORD: If you are looking for a Blu-ray Player with excellent Video and Audio quality at a reasonable price, the DMP-BD85 might be the player for you. With the addition of Netfix and Pandora to Vera Cast, it is an improvement on Panasonic's 2009 models. It has DVD up scaling, Wi-Fi 'Ready', 0.5 Second Quick Start mode, HDMI Jitter Purifier and much more. The Panasonic DMP-BD85K provides you a stack full of great features. -- Price you should look for when purchasing -- Under 250.00.

It may seem like a good idea to buy a VGA to HDMI cable at first glance. But unfortunately, this is not the case. These cables simply don't work; they can't work. The solution that is needed to connect a computer to a high definition television is much more elaborate. A passive cable is unable to do the job so we need to look for a powered solution that can actively translate the signal.

The problem is that a VGA signal is analog, while an HDMI signal is digital. An analog to digital conversion requires an active process that evaluates each bit of information passed and translates it from its range of values to some combination of ones and zeros that can be understood by the receiving end of the HD cable.

The other problem that the conversion presents is that an HDMI cable carries both audio and video signals over the same wire. VGA only carries video signals. Even if we could use a cable to go between the two port types, our audio would get left behind at the computer station.

The real solution is probably to use what is called a VGA to HDMI converter box. The box accepts cables of both types (usually plus an audio input to accompany the video only signal from the computer) and converts the separate audio and video signals into one cohesive digital signal that can be carried by the HDMI cable. There is some loss of quality, but overall it's the best solution that really exists unless you can find different cable types to use.

Panasonic DMP-BDT350 Blu-Ray Player Review

The new DMP-BDT350 Blu-ray Player from Panasonic is a unique player. Not just because it is one of only a few that can playback Full HD 3D Blu-ray Discs, but it has 2 HDMI Outputs. It has other great features like access to VieraCast, Wi-Fi- Ready, a 14 second boot up time and support for DLNA.

The DMP-BDT350, similar to other Panasonic Players, has a slim design. And like other Panasonic Blu-ray Players, they have put an emphasis on lowering power consumption. The player comes with a Power Save Mode where it will shut itself on/off depending on the TV status. Further helping to provide a low power consumption is the UniPhier® single chip LSI. Which can put a whole video signal processing circuit onto one chip. This decreases the amount of parts required and makes for a compact design. Panasonic has even reduced the depth of its players by 18%. By doing this it has resulted in a 15% reduction in the carton's volume.

Video Quality: The DMP-BDT350 can produce 1080/24p video output. It recreates cinema pictures from the Blu-ray Discs or DVD in their original 24p form, without any requirement for conversion. Proving cinema images in the exactly same format used in the film industry. The TV must be a 1080/24p compatible. It can up-convert content that is 480i/p or 720p to High Definition 1080p. The video connections for the DMP-BDT350 are the two HDMI outputs and Component Video Outputs, all of which are located on the back of the player.

The DMP-BDT350 includes PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. This high quality image processing technology processes each pixel produced by the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction. Keeping film colors original, clear and crisp. It reproduces colors with twice the accuracy of normal systems.

Audio Quality: Beside the HDMI Outputs, there are Digital Optical outputs and Analog AV Multi Outputs. It has internal audio decoding for Linear PCM, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS. Along with High Resolution Audio the DMP-BDT350 has 96kHz surround re-master. This is a function which improves the sound quality of CDs and other audio sources. It also helps the quality of the multi-channel sound found on Blu-ray and DVD discs.

The big feature of the DMP-BDT350 is its Full HD 3D playback capability. To watch 3D Blu-ray discs you do need to connect the player up to a 3DTV and use 3D glasses. A pair of glasses is needed for every person. Usually a set of glasses will be included along with the 3DTV. Other pairs will have to be purchased separately. It is recommended that the glasses you purchase be of the same manufacture as the 3DTV. The Panasonic DMP-BDT350, however, can be connected to any manufacturer's 3DTV.

As stated before, the DMP-BDT350 has dual HDMI Outputs. It has the 1.3 version HDMI(MAIN) as well as the newer version 1.4 HDMI(SUB). The reasoning behind these dual Outputs is to allow the DMP-BDT350 to easily integrate with older/existing AV receivers that do not have the new 1.4 HDMI. The MAIN or 1.4 HDMI will be for 3D video and be attached to your 3DTV. The SUB or 1.3 HDMI will be for HD Audio and be connected to your existing 1.3 receiver. Obviously this setup is designed to make 3D viewing easier and integrate it with your existing equipment. The DMP-BDT plays regular 2D Blu-ray disc and would require the regular video setup with just one HDMI connection.

Online Streaming Media Services are available through Panasoinc's VieraCast. Here you can access services such as Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, Picasa Web Album, Bloomberg and a Weather Channel. The recent additions of Netflix, Pandora, Twitter and Fox Sports to VIERA CAST has greatly increased its worth. It now provides you with top notch movie, music, sports and information sites. You can also take advantage of BD-Live downloadable content on Blu-ray Disc as well as the Bonus view feature. Connection to the internet can be by the Ethernet Port or you can connect a Wireless LAN Adapter to the USB port.

USB Port, along with the SD Card Slot is another way you can enjoy movies or music. Located in the front you can play files like JPEG photos, MP3s, and DivX High Definition videos. Panasonic is stating the DMP-BDT350 has a 14 boot up speed. Allowing you to start enjoying your 3D Blu-ray Player right away.
