HDMI, DVI and Component Cables Explained

HDMI, DVI and Component Cables Explained

Hdmi

Background:

As the HDTV market continues to heat up, consumers are in need of being educated on the latest technology in order to make intelligent purchasing decisions. There are a plethora of articles explaining the technical pros and cons of the 3 dominant HDTV display technologies namely: LCD, Plasma, and DLP. However, one all- important, but overlooked feature in selecting a HDTV set is the type of HD video connection. The video connections available for HDTV are: component video, DVI (digital video interface) and HDMI (high definition multi-media interface). We will discuss briefly the pros and cons of each.

Component video cable commonly referred to as R, G, B (Red, Green, Blue) actually consists of 3 separate cables because it distributes the 3 primary color components to the display. All colors can be generated from weighted distribution of each Red, Green and Blue color components. Of the 3 HD connection technologies available today, analog component video is the most mature technology.

-Advantage: Analog component video cable is mature and cost effective.

-Disadvantage: component video cables are analog! All HDTV sets are inherently digital therefore extra digital to analog and analog to digital conversion is necessary in order to process the video. This extra conversion can introduce video artifacts. Since all HDTV's are digital, it only makes sense to use an all- digital connection such as DVI or HDMI.

DVI (digital video interface)as the name suggests is an all-digital video connection. Unlike analog component cables the DVI interface transports the original digitized R,G, B video signals from the HD source to the HD display. Since it is all digital, no artifacts or degradation will be incurred. You will get EXACTLY the picture that the video source supplies with no degradation. DVI connection is often found on HDTV as well as PC video cards.

-Advantage : DVI is ALL-digital, so there is no picture degradation from source to display.

-Disadvantage : Digitizing R, G, B requires extremely high bandwidth. The aggregate data rate of the digital R, G, B signals is 1.65 Gbps! The high bandwidth means that cable quality is important and also the link distance is limited. Typical link budget for a DVI is ~ 15 ft.

HDMI (high definition multi-media interface) is the latest state of art audio and video connection. Technically, HDMI is identical to DVI with 3 notable differences. 1) HDMI is a much smaller connector (it looks like an U.S.B. connector), 2) HDMI utilizes copy protection called HDCP (high definition copy protection) and 3) HDMI carries multi channel digital audio. HDMI, like DVI, is ALL-digital therefore picture quality is "perfect" from source to display.

-Advantage: HDMI is a single digital video and Audio connection. Only 1 single cable is needed to transport both audio and video! This significantly reduces cable clutter behind your theater setup.

-Disadvantage: Like DVI, the link distance is limited and a high quality cable is required because of the inherently high bandwidth required to transport digital R, G, B. video.

Conclusion:

As the HDTV market continues to mature, consumers will need to be educated on the HDTV video connections available. We have outlined briefly the main features along with the pros and cons of each connection solution, so the consumer can make intelligent a choice in selecting the HDTV video connections.

What to Look for When Purchasing an HDMI Receiver

What to Look for When Purchasing an HDMI Receiver

Hdmi

A sometimes overlooked element to a perfect home theater is the perfect sound system to accompany your viewing experience. While much attention has been given to which TV will offer the clearest picture, the brightest views, and the deepest colors, less attention seems to be paid to the sound quality that will accompany that visual experience. Some people are content to just have their standard television produce the audio for the image presented on the screen, but those people who are truly in the market for a true home theater experience know that this will never happen satisfactorily without high quality surround sound, and one of the first components that you will need when building that perfect audio setup is a receiver.

Since HDMI has become so popular it has been widely replacing the toslink and coaxial cables that most of us are very familiar with. When you are getting ready to purchase a new HDMI receiver you will want to look for a few things that you should consider essential before spending your hard earned cash. One of the most important things to consider are the number of inputs that your new HDMI receiver has. You will likely want a receiver that has at least two but preferably four HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs. You will also want to make sure that the receiver has enough coaxial and component inputs as well.

Look to purchase a receiver of the highest quality that you can afford. Receivers are not the place that you want to "cheap out" and get an inferior product. If you purchase a low quality receiver you can reasonably expect that the audio and image quality of your home theater system will be compromised negatively. I would suggest that you look to spend at least in the middle hundreds, 0-0, on the lower end to get a good receiver. When you purchase a receiver also check to make sure that the model you select is up to date in terms of audio decoding. You would be better served getting a HDMI receiver that will handle audio decoding as opposed to purchasing a passthrough receiver that will put the audio decoding on your video player of choice.

Another thing to look for is upconversion and cross conversion which will allow you to cut out the bulk of the cables going in and out of your receiver to and from other components. This is more of an optional consideration but it may be well worth the extra money if you don't want to set up or go through a ton of wires when you are making any adjustments or setting up your home theater system.

In short don't skimp when purchasing your HDMI receiver. A good, high quality receiver hooked up to superb surround sound speakers will make you realize what you were missing when you were merely listening to the audio from your television. You won't regret spending some extra money for that real home theater experience when purchasing your receiver.

Tips For Buying HDMI Cables

Tips For Buying HDMI Cables

Hdmi

There are many people who enjoy having the most state of the art home theatre system possible. They can go out and spend a bundle on the best television and the best speakers, but if they do not have the proper HDMI cables, the quality will not be what it should be. Since the cables that come with most home theatre systems are not always of the best quality, it is important to know the best tips for buying HDMI cables.

The most important thing to remember when shopping for HDMI cables is to shop around. Take a look at the specifications for each kind of cable. They vary greatly between different types and the differences can have a significant impact on the price. Read the packaging carefully and only get what is needed to avoid spending unnecessary money.

In general, it is a good idea to go with CL2 cables. These cables are installed inside the wall and are far less likely to catch on fire than other types of cables. This is great for someone who may want to sell their home in the future because these cables will not meet with any opposition from a home inspector.

Brand names might be necessary for some things, but when it comes to HDMI cables, do not be afraid to go with the generic brand. Look over the specifications and make sure that they are the same as those from the name brand cables. If they are, then the generic brand cables will do exactly the same job at a far lower price than the name brands.

When buying HDMI cables, it is important to look at all of the specification and make sure that someone is not paying for more features than they need. Shoppers should also be aware that the generic brand is just as good as the name brand, which can be far more expensive. With these tips for buying HDMI cables, it should be no problem to have the best video and audio possible for a home theatre system.

What You Should Know About an HDMI Splitter

What You Should Know About an HDMI Splitter

Hdmi

An HDMI splitter is able to send multimedia audio and video signals to multiple display devices. It does this by allowing two, or more, different High Definition Multimedia Interface output displays to share a single input source.

These splitters support many different types of HDMI devices such as a DVD player, video game consoles, computers with High Definition output, and satellite receiver boxes. When this device is used the signal is sent over a single cable with zero to little signal loss. The single cable also reduces clutter and saves quite a bit of space.

The devices are offered in 2, 4, or 8 port configurations and can be cascaded to accommodate even larger configurations of HDMI devices to be joined in a type of network. They are also available in matrix formats of 2 X 2 and 4X4 which are different combinations of a switch and a splitter to allow for remote access and control through TCP/IP or IR.

Installation of this device is relatively easy as it requires no software or device drivers to run. Thus it is simply plug and play as the saying goes. Its compact design is also a plus as it requires very little shelf space to sit on and can even be perched on top of your television if you have an inclination and the space to put it there.

Another reason that this device is so popular is its low power consumption. Thus you can update your home theater set up without using to much more power. A definite advantage when you consider the high cost of utilities nowadays. This allows you the freedom to enjoy your favorite form of entertainment without the worry that your electricity bill is going to wipe out your bank account.

Another key function of a splitter is to amplify and buffer HDMI input signals in such a way as to create two identical output signals simultaneously. Thus uncompressed streams of digital output are transmitted through the use of these devices.

The many applications that this kind of technology has been used for are interesting. For example in business it is being used in digital signage, classrooms, conference rooms, control rooms, shopping malls, information broadcasting, remote monitoring, and training facilities.

Because of its versatility in usage the HDMI splitter has become a very popular piece of technology. In fact it has been said that it dominates all other technology of this type in the field of audio and video entertainment. Thus if you are considering upgrading your home entertainment system then consider purchasing a splitter as a starting point.

Dell XPS 15 L502X Review by The Digital Digest

Dell XPS 15 L502X Review by The Digital Digest On YouTube.

I just received the Dell XPS 15 L502X and wanted to give some initial impressions of this Sandy Bridge based multimedia notebook. This configuration has an Intel Core i7 2630QM (Sandy Bridge) CPU, 6GB DDR3 ram, 640GB 7200rpm HDD, Nvidia 525M w/1gb of ram and Optimus, Intel 1030 N w/ Bluetooth 3.0, 8X tray loading dual layer DVD burner and a full HD (1080p) 15.6 FHD B+RGLED display. HDMI, Display Port, SPDIF, HD webcam, back-lit keyboard, and USB 3.0 are all on board, making this 6+ pound laptop a true desktop replacement both in and out of the house. Battery life with the standard 6 cell battery averaged 4 hours, which for a Core i7 CPU based notebook is unheard of. This is one of the many performance gains that Intel's second generation Sandy Bridge architecture has to offer. Enjoy the video! -TDD

Why You Should Always Use the HDMI Cable

Why You Should Always Use the HDMI Cable

Hdmi

If you have recently purchased a flat-screen TV, you will have no doubt been presented with the task of deciding how to connect it to your media player and/or AV receiver. However, there is an easy choice that does the video and audio in one straight connection, and is also the best quality possible. HDMI is fast emerging as the new standard in digital AV connection. Its versatility and performance exceed the capabilities of any other type of connection. Let's go through some of its benefits

HDMI is digital

HDMI uses digital signals for transmission. If a HDMI connection is well made, theoretically there will be zero loss when data is transmitted within its rated capabilities. This means that both your audio and video signals will be completely free from distortion across the connection.

HDMI carries both audio and video

To hook up your new TV to your receiver or DVD player used to involve multiple cables, be it analogue RCA or digital toslink. This always involved multiple runs of cable - usually one set for video and one set for audio. Not only does HDMI combine all video signals together, it also includes full digital audio. This means that for whatever application, whether going from your TV to receiver, or projector to Blu Ray player, you will never require more than one cable to be run per connection. This not only saves space, trouble and reduces mess, it means that you will only need to purchase one cable.

HDMI is the new standard

As we move further into the new century, the computer and flat-screen TV industry is moving more and more into standardising all connections. USB, for example, has replaced almost all short distance data connections. HDMI is looking to be the new and widespread standard for all AV applications. While it is not expected that we will lose the ability to use other connections such as DVI, RCA or SCART, it is in no doubt that eventually we will look to almost exclusively use HDMI for common AV appliances.

HDMI is expandable

With most connections, design and research stops with the release of the technology. Component video, for example, hasn't significantly changed throughout its entire lifespan. HDMI on the other hand, has been built across a solid foundation and is constantly improving. At the time of this article, it has already gone from its first release to its third iteration of its third major release (V1.3c). Version 1.4 is also about to complete its final stages of development. The current version not only supports audio and video, but full Ethernet data transfer and a whole bunch of other features.

HDMI is the future of multimedia entertainment. It is simple, versatile, super easy to use and reduces mess. The benefits of this connection is boundless - it can be used as a single link between all compatible units, it eliminates the task of choosing the correct connection, it supersedes many more clumsy and obsolete connections, and is flexible and versatile for future improvement and development.

HDMI. It's a no brainer.
